Things I've learnt about the Dutch

First impressions are often lasting impressions. I wonder what the Dutch make of the UK when they first visit.
With the fantastic Warm Showers network we've had the privilege of being hosted in several Dutch Jones. From this it seems to me that the Dutch......

Are defined by their constant, and impressive, engineering battle with the water. Their dykes are huge undertakings and they are clearly still working hard to manage the sea levels as these rise.

From the few Dutch we've met there's a calmness and confidence to them.

Their houses are VERY tidy.

Their agriculture is very intensive. Not a square meter wasted and clearly heavily managed with herbicide and insecticide. This makes for immaculate fields of wheat and maze..... But little in the way of insects or wild flowers. I hate to think what this is doing to their watercourses.

Industrious.

They cycle a lot. Lots of them do. Is this what makes them so thin and happy?
